I was reading one book about neuroscience and it stated that what if or in other words not knowing is the basis for our existence. The fact that we don´t the future motivates us to live. What if tomorrow things will be better and you will achieve the thing you have wanted for so long time. What if everything will go to hell tomorrow and how have you prepared for it? It´s the unknown of how our desires and fears play out in the future that keeps us going.
“The universe forces those who live in it to understand it. Those creatures who find everyday experience a muddled jumble of events with no predictability, no regularity, are in grave peril. The universe belongs to those who, at least to some degree, have figured it out.”
Carl Sagan, Broca´s Brain
We have been trying to unlock mysteries of the Universe and the world we live in since the flicker of consciousness emerged inside our brains. First explaining things through animism and seeing spirits in trees, animals and objects etc. this developed to cults, organized religion, philosophy and finally to science. There are many ways to interpret reality; with emotions or reason, based on observations and critical analysis, only on ideas or any combination of these. The point being that we want to and we need to understand the world surrounding us. This way we can better understand ourselves and the Universe. We want to know how to predict the future but there will always be some amount of unpredictability.
This is due to nature of our reality, in the end (as far as we know it) everything, all matter consists from quarks and according to quantum physics you can predict the movement of these particles only to a certain percentage. In quantum world which is our world, there are no absolutes. Unpredictability seems to be in the very nature of nature. Good example of quantum world´s weirdness to our common sense (which is neither that common nor sensible) is Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment.
When we return to human perspective and scale this same uncertainty prevails. It haunts us and gives us hope, it pushes us to evolve and gives us something to wait for. Meaning is created and only you can create meaning and goals for your existence. Problems might start to appear when you no longer have any goals and you stop asking what if.
At this point you can do what George Carlin did, stop giving a fuck and just enjoy the freak show which provided by everyday human behavior. Distance yourself from the outcome, observe people and wonder what crazy shit mankind will do next. Just ask what next…
